The Lusitania was an ocean liner built in Clydebank, Scotland and owned by the Cunard line. On 7th May 1915, it was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland and more than 1000 people drowned. This caused an international outcry, particularly in the USA, as the Lusitania was unarmed and many Americans were on board. The Germans claimed that the Lusitania was carrying arms to aid the British and this was strongly denied at the time. However, we now know that she was indeed carrying arms and therefore a legitimate target.
