i got the same invitation to join and i have done some research and it seems to me that the national society of high school scholars is a SCAM. they only want your money, and only a tiny fraction goes into scholarships. the fact that you have to question it at all makes it a shady organization, if i were you than i would NOT get involved in that organization.

Many people are saying its a scam, however it is NOT. It does seem legitimate, due to the fact they are in partnership with many legit organizations. It is unknown how much this organization will actually do for you, and if colleges/universities will aknowledge your membership with NSHSS or not. However, I will tell you, a scam (under legal classifications) is a program that takes your money without something in return or taking your money without a stated purpose of why. In the invitation you received from NSHSS, it CLEARLY states the $60.00 you must pay as a membership fee is used to fund the program's scholarships. In return for the $60.00, you become a member and receive special offers (conference invitations, member only offers, etc.) both online, and through the mail. You also receive a membership certificate and a graduation chord. Many people have not herd of this program since it was just recently founded in 2002.

DIFFERENT OPINION -

While this may not legally be a "scam," it's definitely illegitimate. I mean, if you're a good student, you shouldn't have to pay. Anyway, I'd just be wary!

The NSHSS is a real organization connected to other real scholarly-related institutions and really does offer scholarship opportunities and exclusive counseling. However, scholarships are generally meant to give the student free money, not take it. The fact that joining an organization requires a monetary fee of $60 implies that you may be more likely to lose money than to re-gain the amount you pay if you join such organization. Furthermore, practically all scholarships organizations should already be non-profit and self-funded, or at least they should be sponsored by other organizations. For example, McDonald's sponsors the RMHC Scholarship program, while the United Negro College Fund sponsors the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program, so applying for the RMHC or the GMSP is free. Therefore, many people on internet forums and in high schools claim the NSHSS to be a scam mainly because of the lack of concrete, immediate benefits at the expense of an expensive fee.

Thus, the NSHSS is real and truly does provide scholarships and personal counseling, but in the end, most people prefer not to join it. Unless if you want a T-shirt.
