The River Amazon may actually be the longest river in the world.

Scientists debate whether the Amazon, whose length is at least 6,400 km, or the Nile at about 6,650 km is the longest river. Traditionally, the Nile is considered longer, but recent information suggests that the Amazon may be longer. Debates have been raised in recent decades over the true source and length of the Amazon River. Brazilian and Peruvian studies from 2007 and 2008 have added the waterway from the Amazon's southern outlet through tidal canals and the Para estuary of the Tocantins and have concluded that the Amazon is 6,992 km. As of 2010, the length of both rivers remains open to interpretation. Please note, on the link below, Wikipedia has adjusted their list of rivers by length to reflect this fact.

The length of the Nile river is 7,088 km (4,405 miles). It is the longest river of the world. The length of the Amazon river is 6,575 km (4,086 miles). SOURCE: S. Liu, P. Lu, D. Liu, P. Jin, W.
