No. A colony usually referred to what later became a state. So Viriginia was a colony. Whereas "America" referred to the whole region including all colonies of all countries. Later it was called North America.

Yes; Australia was originally a British colony.

The British colonised Australia to expand the British empire, and prevent the French from gaining a foothold in the Australian continent or in that part of the Pacific. A convict colony was established in New South Wales in 26 January 1788, and this is when the British flag was raised on Australian flag for the first time.

That is called secession. The South, led by its President, declared that it was quite legal, on the grounds that the original colonies had seceded from the British Empire voluntarily, and could quit the USA by the same token.

Who created the largest colonial empire?

Great Britain, by far. At its height, the British empire covered almost 37 million km2 and held sway over nearly 460 million people in the early 20th century. The Spanish Empire at its height in the 18th century was around 20 million km2, and the French colonial empire reached an area of 12.5 million km2. As you can see, the British empire was the largest colonial empire in history, and in fact, the largest empire of any kind in the history of the world. The only other empire that came close to being as large as the British Empire was actually the Mongol empire, which reached an area of 33.2 million km2 by the mid 13th century.
