Dave Nelson coached Delaware from 1951-1965. Nelson played for Michigan under Fritz Crisler in the late 30's. When he got to Delaware he brought the Michigan helmet design as well as some aspects of Crisler's Michigan offense with him. Nelson used the same winged helmet at every school at which he coached; modifying the colors to fit those of the respective school.
