Yes. Whether something is considered "true" or not is, in religious matters, based on personal opinion, but I one was to ask "Is it true that the Watchtower claims that the abomination spoken of in Daniel 11 is the United Nations" then the answer is indeed yes. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Daniel's words were prophetic in meaning and had a double fulfillment; firstly when the Roman armies came up against the 'holy city' in 70 CE but in a greater sense with in the 20th Century.

Answer:

The answer above is certainly correct, and I'd like to add to the above answer as Jehovah Witnesses do NOT solely base reasoning on one scripture alone:

In Revelations an angel explains to John: "And the wild beast that was but is not, it is also itself an eighth king, but springs from the seven, and it goes off into destruction." (Revelation 17:11)

The symbolic scarlet-colored wild beast "springs from" the seven heads; that is, it is born from, or owes its existence to, those heads of the original "wild beast . . . out of the sea," of which the scarlet-colored wild beast is an image.

The wild beast has 7 heads, each symbolizing a world power as the angel describes this immediately beforehand ""Here is where the intelligence that has wisdom comes in: The seven heads mean seven mountains, where the woman sits on top. And there are seven kings: five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet arrived, but when he does arrive he must remain a short while."

In Revelations, mountains symbolize governments. These are EGYPT, ASSYRIA, BABYLON, MEDO-PERSIA, Greece (which have fallen), ROME ("one is"), ANGLO-AMERICA, and the United Nations which "springs from the seven...it is also itself an eighth king"

I have no doubt that the UN does play a role in prophecy. It may even be an abomination but not THE abomination. The problem is that JWs are totally unaware of the prophecies foretelling of the final antichrist, for The Bible often changes the name of this character/symbol and JWs do not understand how symbol names change to elude detection by God's enemies.

They also do not know that 2nd and 3rd century Christians were in big expectation of this antichrist, due to what had been past down by the the Apostles. They also do not perceive 2 Thess 2 for what it really means. This speaks of this particular antichrist which will be the big sign of the end nearly arrived.

What happens to the World at the end of Daniel 11?

Answer:The book of Daniel wasn't written in chapters and verses... so, chapter 12 takes up where the translators ended chapter 11."At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then." (Dan.12:1 NIV)This is the time of the Great Tribulation of which Jesus spoke in Matthew 24, just before all life on earth is threatened with annihilation and He has to return to stop it.Daniel records in chapter 12: "...from the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up..." (verse11) - which Jesus references in His description of the Great Tribulation:"...And this gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel - let the reader understand..." (Matt.24"14-15 NIV)."For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now - and never to be equaled again." (Matt.24:21 NIV)What happens to the world, is that the Great Tribulation going on at the end of chapter 11 will reach the point where God will have to cut it short or no flesh would be saved alive... and Jesus Christ returns to save the world and establish the Kingdom of God on earth.

Who was Daniel in Daniel chapter 6?

The Book of Daniel says that Nebuchadnezzar made Daniel second to him in the Babylonian Empire but, later, his son and successor, Belshazzar, did not know Daniel. However, circumstances caused him to place Daniel as third, after himself, in the empire. On the very same night as Daniel's appointment, Darius the Median captured the Babylonian kindgom. Because Darius was impressed with Daniel's demeanor, Chapter 6 says that he then made Daniel second only to himself in the Persian Empire. But chapter 6 must be looked at in the light of history. History say it was not Darius, but Cyrus the Great who conquered Babylon. It was not Belshazzar who was defeated, but King Nabonidus. A man of high standing in both the Babylonian and Persian kingdoms, as Daniel described himself, could not possibly have made these mistakes. And there is no record among either the Babylonian or Persian archives of Daniel ever holding high rank in either empire. In Daniel chapter 6, Daniel found himself the second-in-command to Darius, managing the day to day affairs of the largest empire the western world had ever known, but not so in history.

When did the Maccabees destroy the Abomination of Desolation?

If it refers to the idolatrous image which the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks) placed in the Jewish Temple, then the answer is 165 BCE, when the Maccabees rededicated the Temple to God. Though some passages in Daniel are explained as prophesying the wars of the Maccabees, the one which your Question is quoting (Daniel 12:11) is interpreted by Jewish commentaries as referring to the Second Destruction (in 68 CE), when the Romans razed the Temple and put their idols in its place. By that time, the Maccabees were no longer extant.
