In 1539 the Catholic monks were thrown out. In 1556 Queen Mary restored them to their rightful place. Now it is an Anglican Church, but not a church that belongs to any diocese. It is known as a 'Royal Peculiar' - a church owned and run by the monarch herself and the dean and clergy are not answerable to the Archbishop of Canterbury but directly to thhe Queen. Thus Westminster Abbey is truly a national Church for the whole of the country.
