"Are" does not go with "I" even if you pair it with "not."
The correct expression is "Am I not."

The problem is that there is no generally accepted abbreviation for "am not" other than "ain't." School teachers react in Horror when children use ain't because they tend to use it for all persons/numbers and not just first person singular. So the children grow up to be adults who think that the word "ain't" is vulgar. So they substitute "aren't" which is equally wrong, but does not have the stigma attached to it.
While people may be accepting of "aren't I" and may even pretend that it carries some social refinement with it, to a person who is actually educated in English usage it conveys ignorance.
