The Little Dipper (Ursa Minor) can be just about anywhere depending on your location, the season and the time of day that you are looking at it.

It appears quite close to Polaris (the North star) and points toward Polaris.

How do you determine north east south and west when traveling?

Use a compass :) Or I think there is something to do with the stars A compass is the simplest to use. A GPS system is fancy but expensive. In the northern hemisphere, if you can see the stars, the North Star (Polaris) is always almost precisely north, and the Big Dipper and Little Dipper constellations (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor) are north "enough" to probably keep you properly oriented. During the day, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. And if you have a watch with hands (not digital), point the hour hand in the direction of the sun, and halfway between that and twelve is south.

Does the big dipper point to the north star?

The right hand edge of the pot in the big dipper (ursa major) points to Polaris, the north star. Follow the stars from the lower right to the upper right corners of the pot, and you will find the north star. The north star is also the end of the handle of the little dipper (ursa minor). In the northern hemisphere, the north star never moves in the night sky, no matter what time of night, all the other stars move from east to west over the course of the evening. The north star is due north of the north pole. The number of degrees the north star is above the horizon will always indicate the lattitude of the observer. For instance, Boston is at around 42 deg N lattitude, the north star is around 42 deg above the horizon when looking north.

Do you of latitude go from north to south or from east to west?

north or south. longitude is east or west.
