It all depends on what you are planning to do with your life. If you have a plan, for example, a career you passionately intend to pursue and you have the means and dedication to attend school, then go to school. Yes, school can be hard, but it is worth the work. If you are not sure of what you want to do with your life and you can't find a job that pays well enough to get you out of your current position (living with parents, relative, friends), so you can be an independent adult, then considering the military may be a good option. Look into all 5, yes 5 branches (the fifth is the US Coast Guard) to see what training they have to offer. Consider that all 5 branches offer the same basic benefits after you complete training. Do not go into the military just for the bonuses. They throw the most attractive part of the military at you first, before you can fully grasp the responsibility of the job you will are basically there for (to fight at the command of the President). Going to school first, then going to the military is the best way to go in my opinion, but again it all depends on your current situation and maturity (state of mind). If you go to the military take the practive ASVAB to see what you will possibly be eligible for. If your score is low ask the people at MEPS if they offer study assistance. If not, go to the library and study for the test. Stay away from jobs like driver and cook (either of these jobs don't require military training). Go for something that would take a lot of years to study for in college. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This contributor has never been in the military, but many experiences which he thought were a waste turned out to be useful in later years, such as answering questions like this one. You cannot live without making choices, and each choice is a door to a future which you cannot be sure of. Unfortunately, the only way to find out is to try it. Some military forces require only three or two years of service insterad of four. The French Foreign Legion requires seven years, but the strength and knowledge gained may prove invaluable later.....if you live that long.....which is not guaranteed to anyone. As to the US Coast Guard, it was once a part of the US Treasury Department before being absorbed by the Defense Department (formerly the War Department) which is why US Coast Guardsman with long hair and beards are not seen anymore.
