its in the ecu
If the speedometer and odometer are both not working, I would blame the speed sensor. If only the speedometer does not work and the odometer does work, the cluster is bad.
very carefully!
computer. Usually that is. That way one cant just slap another odometer in a try to say that the car has less mileage on it.
There isn't an odometer light on an Alero, the digital readout is a VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) which is self illuminating. The reason your odometer is out is most likely a blown resistor/resistors or cold solder joints on a resistor. Do a web search for "odometer resistor" and you should find enough info to fix this yourself. Since yours is an Alero probably any gm (grand am, impala, malibu...)with a digital readout will have a similar fix. On your Alero, take the board off the back of the gauge cluster, there should be 3 resistors just to the left of the odometer display. They look like little brown rods about 1/4-3/8" long with silver ends. If any of them are burnt or missing that would be your problem. On my alero they are 180 ohm and probably 1 Watt or so. You can remove all three and replace them with one 60 ohm 5watt power resistor.
SAE 5W-30 any major brand conventional or synthetic oil. Use High Mileage oil if there is over 100,000 miles on the odometer.
Remove the instrument cluster by unscrewing four or 6 screws under top edge, then reach in from RHS and push it back.
Are parts interchangable from a 1999 alero to a 2001 alero
You have to pull the radio trim, instrument cluster trim & top center heat/ac vent. After these are out you can remove the 3- 7mm screws from the back holding the switch in.
The Alero should be a 5x115 bolt pattern.
Where is the charging port for the a/c in a Oldsmobile alero
brake light on when driving oldsmobile alero
The top speed of a 2002 alero is 175 mph. There was a special on topgear where the alero raced an audi and won
