This would have to be classed as a monument on the remnants of a no-longer extant structure- a bridge that collapsed UNDER LOAD with serious loss of life. this was the first really major Bridge Accident of the nineteenth century. as the saying goes, accidents are bad for business and having something like this... One can see monuments in a cemetery- honoring the victims of the Bridge collapse- but within sight of the modern replacement structure. I never could quite see the (martyr Complex) about accidents and this appears to have been a design failure, not a freak operating accident. To the best of my knowledge there is no monument- at least public llike this in the United States of America- as the saying goes- Accidents are bad for Business! Amen.

What was life like for farmers on a seigneury?

Life on the Seigneury was busy. Farmers have to first clear their land, cutting down trees with an axe and removing tree stumps and rocks. They then had to grow crops. They grew wheat for bread and hay for their animals. They raised chickens and pigs, kept cows for milk and meat, sheep for wool, and horses to pull plows and sleighs. Even children have to do these things unless they are to young. Did you know that in New France even the Seingeur works like a farmer as well? Wealth was not an important part in the Seingeur's life in New France.

What was the trenches like?

Muddy, and lots of dead body lay there. Some soilders saw there fellow friends dead! There were rats and lice aswell. The soldiers could catch diseases form them aswell! :( front line trenches These were usually about seven feet deep and about six feet wide. The Allies were forced to dig their trenches in lower ground so they were often waterlogged. They had a zigzag pattern to prevent the enemy from shooting straight down the line. Sandbags were put on both sides of the top of the trench to absorb enemy bullets. Lines of barbed wire protected the frontline trench from any enemy attacks. Fire step This was cut into the side of the trench and allowed the soldiers to peer over the side of the trench towards the enemy. It was where the sentries stood or the whole unit when they were on 'standing-to' duty which meant that they were waiting for a possible enemy attack. No-Man's Land The land that separated the Allies and the German trenches was a wasteland of craters, blackened tree stumps and the occasional shell of a building. It was normally around 250 yards but could vary between 7 yards at Zonnebeke to 500 yards at Cambrai. Communications trenches Linking the front-line trench to the support and reserve trenches. They allowed the movement of men, equipment and supplies and were also used to take the wounded back to the Casualty Clearing Stations.

Who decided to build the White House?

George Washington and a city planner by the name of Pierre L'enfant chose the site. A competition was held for the design, which was narrowed down to 9 candidates. In 1791 James Hoban, an Irish architect, won the commission to build the presidential residence and his design was eventually built. The British burned it in 1814, but it was rebuilt and enlarged under Hoban's direction. In the 1820s, Hoban added eastern and western terraces. The latest addition of the West Wing (1902) and East Wing (1942) provided additional office space. The actual Construction Workers: According to CNN, Washington Times, USA Today and many other reports... Of the 600 people who helped build the white house, about 400 were slaves and the masters of said slaves.. "There was a labor shortage. According to the White House Historical Association, the commissioners planning the building of the new District of Columbia originally planned to import workers from Europe. But when recruitment failed to meet their needs, they turned to slave owners, who would hire out small groups of slaves to earn money. The slaves were involved not only in cutting logs and removing stumps for construction of the new buildings and streets in D.C... Black quarrymen, sawyers, brick makers, and carpenters fashioned raw materials into the products used to erect the White House" reports the Historical Association..."
