They both wil raise the pH in a pool, but they are two different chemicals for two different purposes. (You need both)

pH+ Sodium Carbonate - Raises pH in pool water

TA+ Sodium Bicarbonate - Raises total alkalinity in pool water

It is best to use both chemicals for their intended use.

TA keeps the pH from bouning up and down

pH keeps your eyes from burning and your heater and other pool items from self destructing.

I have seen pools with such a low pH that it will attack the vynal liner and cause it to wrinkle and shorten the life of it.

Does a solution of baking soda and water have a lower pH that baking soda alone?

Pure baking soda does not have a pH. pH is the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions in an aqueous solution (a solution where water is the solvent). But if you have baking soda, or any alkaline substance, in a higher concentration (i.e. more dissolved in the same amount of water) the pH will be higher, if it is in a lower concentration, the pH will be lower.

Can you use baking soda in pool instead of PH plus?

yes, it has nothing to do with cleaning your pool though . soda ash raises the level of PH in you pool, baking soda does the same but it actually raises the TA (total alikinity), thereby stabalizing the PH and using less soda ash, you can buy soda ash alot cheaper at a farmers coop instead of the pool store. It has alot to do with cleaning the pool. If your pool has a concrete bottom and you just used muratic acid to wash it for painting then yes you have to use either soda ash or baking soda to neutralize the acid before painting.

Can you use borax to raise pH in swimming pools?

The most commonly sold product for that purpose is sodium carbonate, aka soda ash, sold as Ph Up by pool stores and as "Washing Soda" by grocery stores. You can also use 20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Booster (sodium tetraborate). It can be found at many grocery stores. Try using the same amount as you would with PH plus 1 lb. to 10,000 gallons, and wait 2 to 4 hrs. Then check your PH reading. If it's still low, add some more until you get it to 7.2 to 7.8 range.Caution - check your alkalinity before using borax, because borax raises PH only, without affecting your alkalinity much. If your alkalinity is also low you can use baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to raise your alkalinity and PH. Baking Soda raises PH and Alkalinity at the same time. Baking Soda has the same ingredients as Alkalinity plus, but half the price. Take a look at this web site for more information on Borax: www.poolsolutions.com/gd/borax_20mule.html
