The peace sign was designed stemming from the Cold War / Nuclear build-up in the late 1950's. The creator took two semaphore signals (flag positions for airplanes and other situations) - the N and D - to stand for Nuclear Disarmament. The D is a straight line up and down, the N is shown with flags held down at an angle from the sides. The creator was Gerald Holtom, designer, for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

All symbols are simply what you wish to read into them. The swastika has a bad rap from the Nazis, but its history is much older; many Native American tribes used it as a positive symbol in their cultures, and it stems from pre- Hinduism and Buddhist cultures (who view as good luck, the sun, etc.) That we currently associate it with a destructive, negative image is our perception only.

Those who would sell fear or condemn others generate the most harm in this world.

No, the peace sign is not the broken cross. The peace sign was designed in the 1950s as a symbol of peace and nuclear disarmament, combining the semaphore signals for the letters "N" and "D" for "nuclear disarmament."

Is the peace sign a devil worshipping sign?

The pace sign is not used in devil worship. It is used in antiwar protests and on bongs. However it looks exactly like a cross of Nero in a circle. The cross of Nero is a broken and inverted cross with very Antichrist roots, Nero (an emperor of Rome) used it to crucify Christians when he prosecuted them during his reign. It is said st Peter was crucified on such a cross.

Where did the peace sign came from?

in the 60's with the Hippie's.-The Peace symbol was originally the symbol of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Also - the peace sign is known as ''broken cross'', ''crows foot'', ''witched foot'', and ''Nero Cross''. German legends say that it was used by 'black magicians' ans pagan incantations and condemnations. The 'broken cross' is identical to the socialists 'peace' symbol. it is known in Germany as a death rune. It was ordered by Hitler's National Socialists that it must be on German death notices and part of the official inscription for the grave stones of Nazi officers. The symbol suited Nazi emphasis on pagan mysticism.

Is a peace sign a broken down cross?

no i would not say it is a broken cross but my sister thinks it is but my opinion is that a piece sign is not a cross It is always best for people to be informed of the change in meanings of types of symbols and other information. The 'peace' symbol down through the last 100 or so years has changed its meaning. The 'peace' symbol has been used in many anti-Christ symbolism and also various rock and roll music. The 'peace' symbol also has come to mean a 'broken cross'. Just as the word 'gay' was originally meant to mean happy around the turn of the century until just recently. Now the word is associated with something else and people don't use it for 'being happy' like they once did. Multiple meanings of symbols and words can still be used for a variety of meanings.

What does the peace sign stand for?

A broken cross by one of the Egyptian leaders in bibical times. Yea I know you thought it stood for peace but its oka just turn to Jesus. I believe the above answer to be wrong... God gave us "free will" I think it is a choice, I like the peace sign because I think it stands for anti war and peace, guess I'm a hippie, but it is what I think. With so many opinions about the peace sign, it is better to make one of your own. both are wrong...... The peace sign is a symbol that combines the Semaphore flag signaling system signs for the letters N and D, which were chosen to signify the nuclear disarmament movement.
