No the Phantom of the Opera is not really a ghost. He is a magician, but everyone believes he is a ghost especially those who had seen his face drawn back in fear this is when his mask is removed. In 1870's not everyone is familiar with magician's tricks so this is the reason he is able to fool Christine in believing he is an Angel of Music and everyone else's a Phantom.

Gaston Leroux the writer of the Phantom of the Opera was influence byJoseph Merrick known as the Elephant Man He became something of a celebrity in Victorian high society. Alexandra of Denmark, then Princess of Wales and later Queen Consort, developed a kindly interest in Merrick, leading other members of the upper class to embrace him. Merrick was unemployable for most of his life. On 29 August 1884, he took a job as a sideshow performer where he was treated decently and earned a considerable sum of money. At one point during his sideshow career, Merrick was exhibited in the back of an empty shop in Whitechapel (259 Whitechapel Road, E1 - now called the Ukay London Sari Centre), where he was seen by the physician Frederick Treves (later knighted). As Treves recalled decades later in his memoirs, he gave Merrick one of his business cards in the event that Merrick would be willing to submit to medical examination. The two men then went their separate ways. When sideshows were outlawed in the United Kingdom in 1886, Merrick travelled to Belgium to find work. He was noted for quoting Shakespeare with the London local actors and actresses. He died at White Chapel Hospital at 27.

1.Woodstock Opera House, the ghost, dubbed "Elvira" by the local theater folk. was once a beautiful actress who was up for a lead part in a ballet. She was said to have been crushed when she didn't get the part and she committed suicide by jumping from the tower of the theater. From the time of this event, the theater has been haunted by her spirit. Strange sounds have also been heard coming from the vicinity of this seat, including sighs of impatience or approval whenever the show is or is not to her spectral liking. On the way down, the opera singer is reported to have suffered a heart attack and died. The cast took its bows to the usual applause. 9. Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London most famous ghost is probably "The Man In Grey", a bewigged young man in a grey riding cloak and 3-cornered hat who appears only during daylight in the Upper Circle. Popular with both cast and management, the man in grey only appears at the beginning of a successful run (which means virtually all productions at Drury Lane, the home of the great musicals). Like the Grimaldi ghost, he too, pokes and prods people, moving them around the stage.

Dan Leno, the popular comedian and clog dancer, who died aged just 43, also haunts the Theatre Royal. Clog-dancing sounds have been heard behind the closed door of his old dressing room and actors on stage for an encore have sensed his presence by the strong smell of lavender, used during his lifetime to disguise the odour caused by a bladder problem.

10. Sorg Opera House The theater's original owner, Paul J. Sorg, haunts the theater in his 1890s formal clothing. Witnesses who have seen him there identify him by a portrait which hangs in the theater lobby. He was an incredibly wealthy man, locally known as "the last of the robber barons," and he built the theater for his young wife, who was in love with drama and opera. Early on, Bob Hope performed here.

Footsteps are the most common occurrence here, along with the sighting of Sorg's ghost. He paces backstage and on the catwalks overhead.

Another ghost belongs to a black man who is supposed to sit in the closed-off balcony for every performance, despite the fact that a ceiling blocks his view. The technical people who work at the theater leave programs for him sometimes

It is believed that the phantom could quite possibly be real, but what is known for sure is that the novel by Gaston Leroux was based on actual events. He researched a lot for his novel, so there is some speculation that the phantom really did exist.
