A basic cleaning is called a prophylaxis. It can remove plaque. If you have a lot of calculus (more than just a random speck here or there), your dentist will recommend a "deep cleaning", which is also called "scaling and root planing". If you have gum disease beyond some basic gingivitis, this is the type of cleaning you will probably need.

It's called scaling of your teeth. The dentist only does 2 quads at a time normally the upper and bottom on one side then schedule u in on another day within a week for the other side. The numb both upper and lower quads and scrape below the gum line with a high pressure water pick. It doesn't hurt but once the numbing wears off it will be a little sensitive but nothing major. The needles are the worst part. I've have this done 3 times since 2005.

What is known to form on the teeth that irritate the tissue surrounding the teeth?

Plaque forms on all surfaces of the teeth. It is a layer of bacteria. Often the part of the tooth closest to the gum isn't cleaned properly and the plaque stay there. It will continue to grow into a thick layer, while it consumes the carbohydrates (eg sugar, starch etc) and then makes acid. This acid can inflame the gums. Plaque can be removed using a toothbrush or floss. Mouthwash will not remove plaque. Conversely, if plaque sits on teeth for too long in certain parts of the mouth with lots of saliva, that plaque can mineralise and become a cement-like layer called 'Calculus' or also known at 'Tartar'. This is a rough surface that harbours more plaque and can irritate the surrounding tissue. Calculus/Tartar cannot be removed with a toothbrush/floss. A dental professional will have to remove this build-up.

What is the soft sticky film created by bacteria that lives in your mouth?

The soft sticky film is called plaque. When plaque is not brushed away, it hardens and forms tartar on the teeth. Tartar must be scraped away with a metal dental instrument & cannot be removed by simple brushing. Brush away plaque so it does not have time to harden into tartar.

How do you treat periodontitis?

Initial therapy Removal of microbic plaque and calculus is necessary to establish periodontal health. The first step in the treatment of periodontitis involves non-surgical cleaning below the gumline with a procedure called scaling and debridement. In the past, Root Planing was used (removal of cemental layer as well as calculus). This procedure involves use of specialized curettes to mechanically remove plaque and calculus from below the gumline, and may require multiple visits and local anesthesia to adequately complete. In addition to initial scaling and root planing, it may also be necessary to adjust the occlusion (bite) to prevent excessive force on teeth that have reduced bone support. Also it may be necessary to complete any other dental needs such as replacement of rough, plaque retentive restorations, closure of open contacts between teeth, and any other requirements diagnosed at the initial evaluation.

Which term describes the soft deposit of bacteria and bacterial by-products on the teeth that can lead to dental decay and periodontal disease?

In almost all cases gum disease is a self-inflicted ailment caused by improper cleaning of the teeth and gums. Food trapped under the gums combines with bacteria to create plaque, a "toxic stew" that irritates the gums and makes them bleed. This colorless film of sticky material containing food particles, bacteria, and saliva attaches itself to the tooth above and below the gum line encouraging advanced gum disease and tooth decay. Then plaque, the "toxic stew," hardens into tartar (calculus) in just 24 hours. By then the damage is done - only a dentist can remove tartar. Each day this "contaminated crust" grows and inflames the gums. That's why you need to remove plaque every day, no matter what, to avoid advanced gum disease. But brushing alone does not remove the plaque.
