It is a promotional term for selling products. There is some very misleading information about leather and its care and you should be cautious about claims made from care product manufacturers. LAA What you really want to check is whether it is aniline treated full-grain leather. These high quality leathers are very soft and may be described as buttersoft (or 'butterskin' according to Remy's 'Skin Information Guide'). According to that clothes site, 'butterskin' is a term applied to high grade English lambskins with full aniline tannage. Roden Leathers refer to one of their quality full grain leathers as butter soft but use of the word butter independent of confirmation that the leather has been aniline treated is not a technical term and does not offer any quality guarantee. The term does not appear to be widely used. Aniline dyeing is reserved for high-quality full-grain leathers but there is more than one type of aniline dyeing - the three I am aware of are full, pull-up or semi. Full aniline leathers have no coating in order to keep maximum breathability but this means they are less protected from liquids than the other two finishes. Pigmented leathers are highly durable for furnishings etc.

Pigmented leather is highly durable but it needs an expert to verify whether the skin quality used was high quality full-grain or corrected grain. Watch out in particular for laminated, bonded or bicast leather - the last two are not leather by most definitions and laminated products may not fit the criteria for leather. The qualities of leather (pliability, ageing, durability, breatheability) and leather substitutes depend on the skins used and how they are processed, so affect their suitability for use in furnishing, clothing etc. If your sole concern is the appearance and you're not bothered by its longevity, you don't need to pay so much attention to these details.
