no timing belt is for crank shaft and cam or cams wich is what makes the motor runs this should be replaced about every 60,000 miles if it breaks it can cause motor damagethe serpentine belt is just the belt for the Power Steering ac alternator
- Update to above answer -
Actually, for the 98 and above models the timing belt doesn't need to be replaced so early. It can be replaced at 120,000 mi. Take, the timing belt cover off and look at the belt. If there is a lot of cracking or you see teeth on the belt are chipped off, you should replace it. If not, let me just say, if you want to deal with the possibility that you don't get the timing right, when you put the new belt on, you're going to have loads of fun trying to get it right.
If the timing is off (and there's a good chance it will be if you're an ameteur repairman), your engine will buck and kick and you will have significantly reduced performance. You will regret you ever knew what a timing belt was. There's a chance you may not get it right because you have to be dead-on precise when doing this. It's not like changing the oil / brakes. Only do this if you are confident in your abilities and patient to handle problems if you don't get it right.
There is no suck thing as a timing sensor. The timing marks for a escort are not on the cams you must use a straight edge.
There is no fan belt on a 1999 ZX2; it has an electric cooling fan. Your question is not worded in question format. We need to know which belt you are talking about (serpentine or timing) and what your question is.
timing belt
No , the serpentine belt is outside of the engine , at the front , and is used to " drive " the accesories . Also , it uses a timing CHAIN instead of a timing belt
the timing belt is located on the left side of the engine in the engine bay. Most mechanics will probably have to disconnect the motor mount to elevate the engine to access the cover and belt. the cover has three bolts holding it. Of course, you would have to remove the serpentine belt to access. Be aware of the serpentine belts positioning, it seems to be a common question! Oops, misunderstood the question , thought the qestion read 1999 not 1989. Anyway, this is for the Escort ZX2!
Go to your auto parts store, they will show you in 10 minutes or less.
80,000 miles
According to the Gates website ( they make timing belts etc. ) both the SOHC and DOHC engines in a 1999 Ford Escort ARE INTERFERENCE ENGINES
if you alternator was locked up .it caused it to jump time. my car done the same thing last week ,now i have to re time it.
No , according to the Gates website ( they make timing belts etcetera ) the 2.0 liter ( SOHC and DOHC ) engines that are used in a 1999 Ford Escort are NOT INTERFERENCE ENGINES
There is usually a diagram on the radiator support. Otherwise a manual for your car will have a diagram in it.
This should help just fine http://www.rldassociates.com/zx2/howto/belt.htm
