yes
If the timing is off by a few degrees the engine can start but will run rough. More than a few (depending on the engine) it will not start.
If your engine backfires when trying to start and the valve timing is correct, then it could be electronic ignition unit or the pick up that causes the spark to occur with wrong timing.
my espace had similar fault - odd whirring noise but no engine turnover - problem was timing belt.
To start timing on the 2C Turbo diesel engine, you will have to locate or distinguish camshaft timing marks.
If this engine is an interference engine it may have done damage to valve, piston, or head. Or the timing is off so far that the engine will not start. Install a new timing belt correctly and start the engine. You will then know if any damage was done.
It sounds like the engine may have jumped time. Check the engine timing. Fuel splash back can ignite, so use caution.
It retards the timing so the engine is easier to start. After it starts, it advances the timing back to an advanced position for best engine performance.
Unless the issue is electrical I would stop trying to start it. If all the wires are snugged properly it should start. If the problem is in the timing belt installation you might bend a valve or otherwise damage the engine.
yes, if the timing belt breaks the pistons can hit the valves causeing the valves to bend, or causeing a hole in the piston(s) eather way the engine would need to be completely rebuilt. the same damage could be caused by trying to start the engine without the timing belt intact,
Sounds like the timing is off.
It will not start with a broken timing belt
Disconnect the plug going to the distributor that has two wores. Start the engine and set the timing to 0 (TDC). Stop the engine, reconnect the plug and the 'puter will handle the timing from there on.AnswerDisconnect the plug going to the distributor that has two wires.
