If the timing is off by a few degrees the engine can start but will run rough. More than a few (depending on the engine) it will not start.

If your engine backfires when trying to start and the valve timing is correct, then it could be electronic ignition unit or the pick up that causes the spark to occur with wrong timing.

To start timing on the 2C Turbo diesel engine, you will have to locate or distinguish camshaft timing marks.

my espace had similar fault - odd whirring noise but no engine turnover - problem was timing belt.

User Avatar

If this engine is an interference engine it may have done damage to valve, piston, or head. Or the timing is off so far that the engine will not start. Install a new timing belt correctly and start the engine. You will then know if any damage was done.

User Avatar

It retards the timing so the engine is easier to start. After it starts, it advances the timing back to an advanced position for best engine performance.

User Avatar

It sounds like the engine may have jumped time. Check the engine timing. Fuel splash back can ignite, so use caution.

User Avatar

yes, if the timing belt breaks the pistons can hit the valves causeing the valves to bend, or causeing a hole in the piston(s) eather way the engine would need to be completely rebuilt. the same damage could be caused by trying to start the engine without the timing belt intact,

User Avatar

Sounds like the timing is off.

Disconnect the plug going to the distributor that has two wores. Start the engine and set the timing to 0๏ฟฝ (TDC). Stop the engine, reconnect the plug and the 'puter will handle the timing from there on.AnswerDisconnect the plug going to the distributor that has two wires. Unless the issue is electrical I would stop trying to start it. If all the wires are snugged properly it should start. If the problem is in the timing belt installation you might bend a valve or otherwise damage the engine.

User Avatar

Sorry but I must be blunt here. If you do not know where the timing belt is, then you have no business trying to replace it. This is an interference engine. Install the timing belt incorrectly on this engine and when you start it, you will have engine damage. Take it to a professional for the belt replacement. Also replace the water pump at the same time to save yourself labor costs down the road.

User Avatar

On an interference engine you can have internal engine damage when you attempt to start it. On a noninterference engine it may not start or it may backfire, or miss, if it does start.

Check engine compression Check engine timing

User Avatar

AnswerSounds to me that your vehicle is off time. Check the timing on it. If the timing is off it will backfire through the carb and also if it is cross wired (firing order wrong) it will backfire through the carb.

User Avatar

If it is running at the time it back fires your timing is off about 22 degrees. if it happnes when you are trying to start it then you timing is off 180 degrees.... Your intake valve is open when the spark plug fires.

User Avatar

Yes, if the timing belt broke or skipped, the engine won't start.

User Avatar

Start and run, no. Cough, backfire, yes.

User Avatar

you will replace the timing chain when mornig cold start becomes noisy Normally it will last the life of the engine, and is replaced when the engine is overhauled.

User Avatar

I think,You can'nt start engine if this happened.
