No the universe is not flat.

This can be observed simply by looking into space.

In every direction from earth there are stars in the sky, for light years away.

The redshift also dictates that nearly every galaxy is moving away from us.

This could be observed from anywhere in the universe.

So the universe is expanding in all directions and is definitely not flat.

Comments: Unfortunately it's more complicated than that.

When it is said that "the Universe is flat" that doesn't mean the Universe is two dimensional, or anything like that. It is confusing, but the word "flat" is being used

in an unusual way.

(Sometimes scientists do use words in a confusing way.)

It refers to the amount of mass in the Universe and whether that mass will be able to stop the expansion of the Universe.

At present, astronomers are not sure if the Universe is flat or not.

Another meaning is that space itself may be "flat" (or "curved").

(Strictly speaking it's "spacetime" that may be flat or curved.)

So, our "ordinary" three dimensional space may be flat or curved.

Even if it's "flat" it's still 3D space.

These ideas about the fate of the Universe and the curvature of space are closely connected.

So, after all that, the answer is the Universe may be flat, but we are not certain.

Note: See "related links" below.

The second link is probably too detailed for many people, but it gives a good summary of the problem.

Even if you can't understand all thedetails (and I don't either) these links give a good idea of what this question is all about.

What happens when earth is flat?

Nothing in the Universe is as large as the Earth AND flat. If the Earth were flat, it would be the only flat object, other than some small asteroids.

Earth is round so why is the universe flat?

The shape of the Universe on a large scale is not yet known. As far as we can see, it seems flat; for comparison, when you look a few meters around you, the Earth also seems to be flat. On a much larger scale, the Universe may have a positive curvature, a negative curvature, or no curvature at all.The shape of the Universe on a large scale is not yet known. What is an open flat Universe?

This is a theoretical model of the universe. A Friedman Universe can have positive, zero or negative curvature. If the curvature is positive then the universe is closed and curved. A light ray going in any direction would make a complete circuit if the universe and return to the starting point. If the universe has zero or negative curvature it is open and unbounded and said to be flat. A light ray would travel in a 'straight' line and not return to its point of origin.
