If there is any kind of part attached to the exahust manifold, it will either be an EGR valve (emissions) or an Oxygen sensor (emissions and fuel/air control). Not sure what you mean by a "heater valve" but the only thing in your engine bay that produces heat for the cabin would be the antifreeze which runs through the heater core somewhere behind the dash, possibly on the passenger side, depending on the vehicle.
