There are several muscles involved in bending the arm, and several others used to extend the arm.
Muscles can only PULL; they cannot push or twist.

bicep- it bends the arm while the triceps straighten the arm.
The muscle/muscles that bend your arms are called Flexor and Extensor.
While one muscle contracts, the other muscle in the pair returns to its original length. The main muscle that bends your upper arm is called the Biceps brachii. The action is called flexion at the elbow. This muscle is on the "front" of the arm. The muscle that acts against this one is called the Triceps brachii. Its' action is extension at the elbow. A single muscle can only pull in one direction, so you need a combination of muscles to be able to move around in a useful manner.
