What is a strut bearing plate?
The top of the strut is connected to the vehicle body through the upper strut mount, in some cases called a bearing plate. This bearing plate allows the strut to pivot as the wheels are turned. It must be flexible enough to handle slight angle changes and dampen movement of the upper end of the strut. This mount or bearing plate transfers vehicle load to the strut and spring, making the upper mount/bearing plate the load carrier and the lower ball joint the follower.I found this on the Monroe site.

This would be on a front strut style of shock. The strut mount has to allow the spindle to turn and usually has a bearing to allow this. If it is dry or seizing you usually get stiff steering and some noise.

there are a few causes for this, could be trailing arm bushings or any suspension part. check the upper strut plate it may be worn out. the strut is hooked to inside of tire, so if a upper strut plate is bad it will make tire loose. I just had a new strut plate put on, that was the problem. a bad wheel bearing will howl if bad enough. because a bearing on abs is very expensive to re place, check upper strut plate. the plate that is on top of strut in trunk. if the plate, it has to come off and be compressed to take off spring.

Remove two lower strut bolts holding bottom of strut to the spindle. Remove the bolt holding the brake flex hose to the strut Some model years have the outer tie rod attached to the housing, separate the tie rod from the strut if you have to (can't remember on a 1992) Remove the 3 top nuts in the engine compartment ond the whole assembly will come out Put the strut in a spring compressor and compress the spring Undo the top center nut in the center of the upper mount/bearing plate The strut will fall out of the spring. Extend the piston fulley on the new strut and slide it back into the mount/ spring assembly Tighten the top nut in the center of the upper mount (new one comes with new strut) Make sure the spring is in the correct position when you put it back together and reverse the instructions to install. You will need an alignment!! Check the upper mount bearing before reusing
