In New Jersey there is a placement test for incoming freshmen. However, it is not an admissions test for the purpose of being admitted to a degree program. In fact, most students are accepted to the institution before they even take the test. The test is simply to determine whether a student needs some refresher courses in English or math, and this to ensure a students success at the college level. A student does not pass or fail the test - briefly speaking - however if the test indicates a need for remediation, the student will be required to take the courses prescribed.

The test is broken down into four parts. Two parts English and two parts math. This would include, sentence sense, and reading comprehension. For math it would include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, square roots, and percentages. Then it moves up to the equivalent of a high school Algebra I.

Some students are exempt from one or both portions of the test based on SAT scores. There are other exemptions that can be retrieved from the colleges admissions office or assessment center.

Once again, this is not an admissions test, but placement test.
