Yes and no. There was a group of people in the First Century CE(AD) that followed the teachings of Jesus. They are referred to as the "Judeo-Christians" (also known as the "Gnostics"), and it is rumoured that this group included several of the Apostles, Jesus' brother, his companion (and rumoured wife) Mary Magdalene, and many other historical figures.

A little later on that original group split into two groups, the Judeo-Christians, and the Pauline Christians, who believed the literal truth of the story of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. Eventually the Pauline Christians won out, having their four "divine" Gospels chosen to be the ONLY "true" version of Jesus' life (at the Council of Nicea in 325CE. After the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were chosen, the hundreds of other texts about Jesus were all but destroyed. People caught reading any other gospels were persecuted or worse.

A few documents have survived from these early Judeo-Christians. The largest discovery to date is the Nag Hammadi Library, which was only translated a few years ago. The Apocrypha (or "stories of the life of Jesus not ordained by the Roman Catholic Church") contains some absolutely amazing texts about the life of Jesus and his philosophy. These include the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Judas, and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene. These were all texts written by Jewish followers about Jesus.

What was Saint Peter's religion?

Peter was born Jewish, as were most (if not all) of Christ's immediate disciples. He was one of the founders of the Christian faith, but Christianity did not spit from judaism and become an organized religion in its own right until long after Peter's death. Peter would likely have considered himself to be a member of a Jewish sect based on the teachings of Jesus.

Who did the Romans adopt Christianity from?

The Romans adopted Christianity from the Jews. Up until the time of the emperor Domitian, Christianity was considered a Jewish sect. When Domitian tried to impose a tax on the Jews which included Christians, the Christians balked and proved that they were not a Jewish sect, but a distinct religion. (This didn't stop Domitian from persecuting them though)
