Typically it is not the state that mandates math at a college or university level. It is the college or university and the department that offers the specific program of study. There are programs of study that require math, and the are those that do not. Still, I have the feeling are basing your major on whether a program has math rather than a passion for want you really want to accomplish as a career. Do not do this! Do not let one subject area prevent you from doing something you really would enjoy. It is not an inability to do the math, it is the fear of math itself that is biting you. Remember, every book starts with a page one. If you need help, all colleges and universities have an academic learning center, where you can get that help. Pick your career out of passion, not because you have a fear of math.

Can I get my associate's degree in one field AFTER getting my bachelors in another. Say I get a bachelors in Biology and I want to prove that I can do math so I want to get an AS in Math. California?

First, the answer is , yes you can. However, why do you feel you need to prove yourself in math? You must have a reason. If your going to purse another degree, it should lead you to something specific and beneficial. If this is the case then fine. If not, I would think about taking an advanced degree within a field you have a real passion for.

What degree do you get when you graduate from a four-year college or university?

The four year degree is a bachelors degree. It could be a Bachelors of Arts (BA), or Bachelors of Science (BS) degree depending on the program of study, and which focus the department offering the degree has. If its an arts degree, the scope will be broader to include a well rounded education in a variety of disciplines to include intellectual skills like critical thinking, problem solving, reasoning and judgment skills, that in essence will compliment the specific program of study whether in business, communications, psychology etc. If the degree is in the sciences it will have a more narrow focus, in terms of research, math, science, and practical skills. A bachelors can be either an arts or science. In other words, the degree for a business major can either be a BA or a BS. It just depends on the institution and the department within the institution on how they label the degree. The same goes for many other disciplines.
