Should have been made sometime between 1931 and 1941. If you really need a more exact date, search other answers for the Stevens Historian's address. All Hat, No Horse, I wondered if it didn't fall somewhere within that timeframe. Could you tell me how you know that? Thanks, Tom This is one of those things I have in my notes but didn't document the source. Stevens introduced this gun as the Model 5000 in the early 1920's, changed the designation to 5100 about 1931, and changed it again about 1941 to the Model 311. Some were marked with both 5100 and 311.
Springfield manufacture by U.StevensCompany G.A.P.T doubvle barrel dual trigger Chicopee Falls, Mass. USA Proof tested 410 gauge selected forged steel
I have a 12 guage side by side that reads on the left of the receiver: J Stevens Arms Company. next line. Chicopee Falls, Mass.U.S.A. ... above it --SPRINGFIELD-- It has double triggers. It has on the bottom of the barrel locking lug a stamped 7 and a faint circle with an S in it. I have determined it was made 7/1967 based on an A being 1949. The receiver is charcoal case colored. the barrels say SELECTED FORGED STEEL and the other side says PROOF TESTED 12 GUAGE. It is a neat old piece i received with the barrels a bit rusted, but rescued in a rust dissolver bath(auto industry) and have since sanded and painted flat black. I added white out to the front bead, cleaned up the inside if the barrels and gonna use it as my field gun for pheasant this fall. I hope this helped.
I'm having the same probem. Except mine has matching numbers (33NL) stamped on the bottom of the barrel and inside the triger housing. No other numbers Mine also says "Springfield" manufactured by "J.Stevens Arms Company" Chicopee Falls, Mass. U.S.A. Other markings - top of barrel left side -proof tested 410 bore/---3 inch chamber---/ top of barrel right side - Selected Forged Steel. Any info. call.....317/523-1438
A key determinant is how the company name is marked (Stevens, J. Stevens Arms, J. Stevens Arms and Tool, J. Stevens Arms Co). Then you can date its manufacture +/- 20 years. Looking at the barrels should tell you if it is damascus. You should be able to find pictures of damascus and other laminated barrels on the internet. Most Stevens doubles will also have a patent date marked on the right side of the receiver. This will give you a "no earlier than" date for its manufacture.According to the 5th Edition of Standard Catalog of Firearms (Krause Publications), p. 677 "Collectors will find a date code stamped on every double-barrel shotgun in the Stevens brands produced between March 1949 and December 1968. Usually, it is behind the hinge pin or ahead of the triggerguard on the bottom of the frame. It will appear as a small circle containing a number and letter. The letters cofrrespond to the years shown in the following table. Significance of the numbers is not known [examples are provided: A=1949; B=1950; C=195l, etc.]." I determined that my Stevens 311D is a "circle G," or, made in 1955.More Information NeededThis can only be answered by knowing exactly how the company name is marked (Stevens, J. Stevens Arms, J. Stevens Arms and Tool, J. Stevens Arms Co). Then you can date its manufacture +/- 20 years. Ask a new question with these details for your firearm.I have a JStevens Arms.Co. 1864-1935
Turn of the century; 50-100 USD
I own a Greenough dimascase forged barrel shotgun. I'm not familar with the stampted lam.
Most firearms made before 1968 did not require a serial number on them. This makes finding the year of production difficult to say the least.I can say that the Savage/Stevens model 94 was produced during the years 1929-1945.There was a total production of all models in the amount of 934,000 firearms.I hope this helps some.
Virtually all of the single shot Stevens 12ga shotguns are going to top out shy of $100. sales@countrygunsmith.net
The .410 is a popular gun. A Springfield .410 in good used condition usually carries a price ranging from $75 to $150 at gunshows. The better the condition, the higher the price. The Stevens 15B is worth maybe $100 tops, even in excellent condition. I bought one at the big Sioux Falls show last year for $45 in really nice shape.
Remington uses "hammer forged" rifled barrels on all production rifles. Their custom shop uses mostly "button rifled" barrels unless the customer specifies a barrel made by a custom barrel maker who uses the "cut-rifled" process to install rifling into a barrel blank.
How was this Forged? The sward was forged from pure metal.
