According to Gates ( they make timing belts etc. ) the 2.3 liter - 4 cylinder engine in a 1989 Ford Ranger is NOT an interference engine so there should be no valve damage
The engine cylinders on a Ford Ranger V6 are numbered : firewall 3 - 6 2 - 5 1 - 4 front of Ford Ranger ( V6 )
the dipstick should be located on the driver side of the engine, pretty close to the brake fluid holder, or right in front of the middle spark plug hole on that side

The engines in a 1989 Ford Ranger would take ( " regular " unleaded gasoline , 87 octane ) * 2.3 L four cylinder / 2.9 L , V6

The oil pressure sending unit is located on the drivers side of the engine on the rear of the head. It has one wire going to it. It's a pain in the butt to get to. I'm looking for the temp sending unit on my 89 4cy ranger. Any idea?
