A promising polymer that could be grown sustainably and that could possibly replace typical plastic is cellulose. Cellulose is a organic polymer produced within plants and there is research in developing some stable products from this resource; however, a lot of research still needs to be done within this area.

Yes, plastic is made out of oil, usually fossil fuel oil, but it can also be made from vegetable oil, just as vegetable oil can be used to drive a diesel car. The advantage of this is that the plastic can be biodegradable, that is, it breaks down into harmless fragments, and so cannot contribute to the damage and pollution caused by plastic junk in our oceans and landfills.
