In the book, Dracula, Professor Van Helsing makes a garlic wreath for Lucy Westenra to put around her neck, to ward off the vampire. He places garlic flowers in her bedroom and smears garlic all around the windows of her room to repel the vampire. It is only when her mother removes the garlic, because she thinks the smell too overpowering for Lucy, and is innocent of what is happening, that Dracula is able to gain entrance to the room and drink Lucy's blood. Professor Van Helsing has studied folklore and we understand from the novel that he is knowledgeable in these matters.
