Yes, there is legal aid for civil cases, but only if you qualify for it. You must be unable to afford a lawyer. Legal aid organizations all have their own income eligibility rules, and they don't all handle the same types of cases. To find out if you're eligible, and if the legal aid organization handles your type of case, you have to contact them. Most have websites with their criteria and contact information.

To get a list of all the legal aid organizations in your area, use the related link. Select your state first. Next, find the Choose a Court Resource Category box and select "Legal Aid and Lawyer Referral". That will give you a list of links to all the legal aid agencies in your area.

Can you get legal aid for slander?

Not really. Legal aid provides assistance for criminal charges. Slander is a civil matter.Added: If you are asking about FREE legal aid (i.e.: a Public Defender), no, Slander is a civil offense and public defenders only defend indigents involved in criminal law matters. If by "legal aid" you mean "free" legal advice - No. This is a civil matter, not a criminal matter. But you can certainly hire an Attorney and sue for slander. If they feel you have a good case, they may consider taking it on as a contingency fee basis. You will have to prove that this slander ruined your reputation or standing in the community. Unless it was broadcast over the air (TV or radio), you may have a tough time proving it, in which case it is doubtful you will recover even the costs - let alone get the justice you seek.

Who is eligible to receive legal aid?

In criminal cases, if a person is at risk of jail and has minimal income and assets he may be entitled to a lawyer at public expense. In civil cases, most urban areas are served by one or more legal aid organizations that may provide a lawyer if the client meets their criteria for poverty-- however no one has a legal right to have a free lawyer in a civil case.
