There are currently four uranium mines active in the US. They are in Wyoming, Nebraska, and Texas. The Colorado Plateau, in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, was the largest single source of uranium in the US. The area was mined from 1947 to 1959.

Uranium is present in low concentrations in some Illinois coal seams. It is essentially a trace mineral, and is more of a hazard than a mineral that occurs in a way that makes recovery cost effective. Uranium mining is a volume intensive operation, but world prices have never been high enough to even consider attempting to recover uranium from any sites in Illinois.

Michigan does contain some Uranium. In Lower Michigan, glacially deposited granite rock, limestone and sandstone deposits will contain elevated Uranium, as indicated by Radon Surveys from the United States Geological Survey. It has also been discovered that Uranium deposits may exist in the Jacobsville area of the Northern Peninsula, as water tests indicate elevated levels of uranium in the groundwater above safe drinking levels. The National Forest Service has also in 2009 permitted 50 exploration wells to be dug in the Ottawa National Forrest indicating that there may be further Uranium deposits in the Northern Peninsula's Precambrian rock.

Uranium exist now in many countries but for long term the reserves are limited; in the future a crisis of uranium is possible with the consequence of a price increase.
