Salaried cosmetologists usually work in retirement homes.

The hair places in malls, Walmarts and other such places pay either by the hour or by commission--you get, say, fifty percent of everything you bring in. Those places are REAL easy to pick out because they try to get you to buy a lot of extra items like hair products, waxing, color...

If you go into a place that pays salary, commission or hourly, they will provide the towels, chemicals and other things you'll need. The one in the Walmart near me advertises "all you'll need to supply are your shears."

I'd say the most common way cosmetologists are paid is by "booth rental." You pay a certain amount of money every month to get a chair, laundry service and other things. You'll be charged for the chemicals you use--if you color someone's hair, you'll pay $20 or whatever the charge for color is. But any money you make goes to you.
