In science, I belive we should never be so sure, specially when the area is Marine Paleobiology.
Fossilization is an extremely rare process, and finding new fossil species is a one-life experience for a paleontologist.
"Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence".
Most probably we will never find a fossil of the only part a gigantic triassic octopus could leave: its beak.
Which doesn't mean the «Triassic kraken» never existed.
Not very long ago, the giant squid (Architeuthis dux) was only a mith, a sailor's story not taken seriously by science. A few years ago, nobody knew about the existance of the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni). And these two examples refers to extent species.
Deep-sea gigantism IS a fact.
Cameroceras yielded a total length estimated in about 9 meters. In the Ordovician, 480 millions of years ago. We only know about this cephalopod because it had an exterior hard shell.
There were giant octopus in the depths of Mesozoic oceans? Like the one exemplar found ashore in 1896, and named Octopus giganteus by the late Prof. Hyatt Verrill?
I belive the «Triassic kraen» indeed existed.
And I deeply regret I will never be sure of its real existence, beyond doubt.

I honestly do not think they were lying when they painted them. So YES i think it does OR at one time did exist because it might be dead by now. I also think yes and i even heared a story about it a couple years ago. it was about a squid with hooks on its tentacles and it was the as long as ten busses. they captured it and took it. they did research on it and it was only a baby one so to this day they don't know how big they get and some think they don't exist at all.
