Aquifers are groundwater.
Aquifers.
Subsurface water is found in layers called aquifers.
Ground water

Our drinking water comes from surface water and ground water. Surface waters include rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. While ground water is pumped from wells that are drilled into aquifers.
Water from precipitation that stays on the surface, such as in lakes or streams is "surface water." Water which is absorbed into the ground (and stored in aquifers) is "ground water."
North Dakota has both surface water (lakes, rivers, streams) and ground water (aquifers and wells).
underground under the water's surface
Most water is found in the icebergs and glaciers floating around. The next highest amount of fresh water is found in the ground. (groundwater and aquifers)
Aquifers can be found underground in many places around the world. They are typically located beneath the Earth's surface where water is stored in permeable rock or sediment layers. Aquifers can be accessed through wells for drinking water and irrigation purposes.
Pesticides can reach water-bearing aquifers below ground from applications onto crop fields, seepage of contaminated surface water
