I I was you I would use Windows Movie Maker. This is great and I think it is simle to use. I really like I-movie but you can not get that on XP.
Linux Mint is the best distro in my opinion because it is easy to use and you can use any desktop environment for it, but really what distribution you use is up to your needs if you have certain needs you might need a different distro. As for Windows I do not really use windows on any home machines because of viruses and other security problems, but the best release of windows in my opinion is Windows XP because it can still run on older hardware, and it will give new hardware a boost.

Window privacy film can be used to temporarily tint your windows. You can get a roll of it for about $30 at Walmart. You could use it to do your house windows, but you'd have to be really careful about cutting it out.
In my opinion, NO! Macs are awesome, but windows, they're not really that great. Windows 7 is pretty descent, but Macs are nothing but genius. So I recommend Macs, but what you prefer may or may not be a Mac.
