It might be caused by allergy to gluten in wheat, rye, barley. My husband suffered five or six years with painful blisters and itchy places on knees, butt, scalp, etc. The pain and itchiness made him miserable. He was finally diagnosed with Dermatitis Herpetiformis, caused by gluten allergy. He now takes Dapsone (inexpensive) and avoids breads and flour products as much as possible. Now and then he gets an itchy spot, but takes a bit more medicine and cuts out all wheat products for while.
