My 97 Grand Cherokee was doing the same thing. Replacing the computer was the answer after being at 2 different dealers, two times each, I figured it out myself when they couldn't. Also called ECU (engine control unit) or PCM (powertrain control module)
No shampoo repairs split ends. Only cutting them off repairs them. The shampoo people have given everyone a lie to sell their goods.

Surgeons are trained in cutting the human body to do repairs. Some do heart surgery, some eye surgery. Some specialize on a particular joint to do replacements.
The AC compressor on a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be repaired by purchasing a new unit or by sending the existing unit off for repairs. These are sealed units which do not have user serviceable parts beyond the outer seals.

YES Define "bad." For resale, sure, because it will cause you to get less money. For repairs, probably, because it may result in a more repairs than if you have purchased a new vehicle. Is this close to the top of the mileage it can go to, absolutely not. 144,000 is a lot of miles but my 95 Cherokee was at 321K before it relocated to my parents last fall for a less demanding retired country life! It is still running fine - just not putting on the amount of miles/week as when it was mine.

My 1993 Cherokee w/ a 6 cyl. has a documented 466,000+ Miles. aside from general maintance, I've only replaced about 600.00 dollars of parts in the last 8 years. don't give up to soon!
You will have to get the engine scanned and the necessary repairs made. Then the check engine light can be cleared. Just to clear the light without the repair will result in the light comming back "on."
