The Spanish-American War of 1898 was called by the press, the "Splended Little War", and was the "Operation Desert Storm" (1991 and called the 100 hour war by the press) of the 19th century. The Spanish-American War only lasted 6 months, and about 385 US servicemen were killed during the conflict...but 5,000 men died from disease (mostly YELLOW FEVER). Desert Storm had about 200 US fatalities. Consequently, both were very similar: Both were short and had nicknames indicating so; both had nearly the same amount of casualties; both occurred in the 90's of their respective centuries; and both were acknowledged by the public at the time to have "united the nation from the effects of a divisive Civil War (Vietnam War)." Both had grand parades for the returning servicemen; and both were fought COMPLETELY by volunteers!
The Spanish-American War of 1898 was also the last time the US Army/Marines wore the blue uniform in battle. By coincidence, Desert Storm was the first time the US Army/Marines ALL wore the new desert camoflage uniforms.
