While the 2nd Amendment was recently held by the Supreme Court to confer an individual right to keep guns in the home for self-defense, this right currently only applies against the federal government.

This means that individual states, at least for now, could ban the ownership of all guns outright, but no states have done this (though some states are very restrictive on what types of guns individuals may own).

In many states, assault weapons are illegal. The federal government can also restrict the possession of guns on federal property (federal courthouses, federal office buildings, etc.). Furthermore, many states prohibit convicted felons from owning guns.
