Cropping a dog's ear is cutting a portion of the ear off. Some dogs rely on this outer ear to protect the inner ear from water and bugs and etc, so cropping this type of ear can, indeed, be bad for the dog. Hunting dogs sometimes have their ears cropped to, theoretically, protect them from animals that will grab the ear and/or to protect them from the pain and blood loss of a torn ear from running through the brush. This is about the only valid reason for cropping the ears of a dog. In most other cases, cropping is completely unneeded and even the AKC has recently ruled that lack of cropping is not a disqualification for dogs with traditionally cropped ears. A show dog should be judged by the quality of the dog, not the quality of the doctor who hacks off his ears. If you want a short-eared dog, breed short ears onto them.
I am going to assume that you had a Veterinarian do the ear cropping and not yourself. There are certain creams that you can put on the edges that will help to ease the itching but the best thing is to either take your dog back to the Vet who did the ear cropping or call him or her, to treat these cropped ears. Have you ever considered not cropping the ears? A lot of folks in the show world and pet world are not cropping ears anymore and the dogs look wonderful. The original reason for cropping the pitbull's ears were to help keep its ears from being grabbed or bitten while fighting.
Cropping is illegal in the UK and should be in the US, it's cruel and pointless. Crop and tape your own ears. http://www.petforums.co.uk/dog-health-nutrition/6565-ear-cropping.html
The price for ear cropping is usually between $250 and $350.
It is painful and unnecessary. Cosmetic surgery on animals is unethical. Don't do it.
Ear cropping is illegal in all of Australia, but it is still legal in most of America and Canada.
Ear cropping was originally used to prevent the dog's ears from becoming torn in fights with other dogs or wolves. Today it is performed on certain breeds for cosmetic reasons. In countries were it is still legal, ear cropping is done to make the dog look better for shows and to match the Breed Standard. Boxers can be shown cropped or natural, depending on the owners preference. Although the operation is illegal in England, in America almost all show Boxers are cropped. There is no real purpose other than for looks, but supporters of the operation claim that it helps keep the ears free from mites and prevents infections.
== == While there are still some breeders that ear crop and tail dock you can thank breeding shows for this, but, times are changing and it's slowly going out of style. However dogs such as Doberman Pinchers, etc., still have their ear's cropped while in show. To some breeders and the Breed Show Society ear cropping and tail docking is no different than some people getting plastic surgery, but a in British Columbia society is putting the heat on this behavior.
