That's just a typical GM oil gauge.
check cylinder compression. rings could be out.
Have the ignition coils checked does it happen around 50 60 mph?

There was no LT1 in the 1992 B body, the LT1 was introduced in the F body and Corvette in 1993, and 1994 in the B and D bodies.
The rpm required for an alternator will depend on the result that you want. At the very least, you will want 1200 rpm. The rpm's can go as high as 5000.
