Most older windows were built in place by a carpenter, not pre-assembled in a factory like they are today. The problem is that you will most likely have to disassemble the frame work to remove the sash. There is usually a framing strip on the edge of the track where the sash moves up and down. By removing this strip you should be able to pull the sash out of the frame.
Some heavier windows were counter weighted with a rope and pulley system inside the frame. This system must be be detached before you can remove the sash. Be careful not to allow the rope to fall over the pulley into the space behind the frame.
