The major resources used to be timber of many kinds (including maple, ash, oak, birch, hickory, elm and Osage orangewood and black locust further south), deer of various types, the eastern woodlands buffalo (up to about 1800), turkeys, fur-bearing animals like beaver, ermine, mink, foxes, squirrels, otter, lynx, marten, skunks and rabbits, native copper around the Great Lakes, areas of flint, stone for carving and blades, clay for pottery, porcupines for quillwork decoration, cattail stems for mats, basswood fibres for bags and sashes, "Indian hemp" for cords, ropes and nets, birchbark for containers, canoes and dwelling coverings, sweetgrass and cedar bark for storage containers and natural red ochre for making paint.

Large lakes and extensive rivers were used as the main transport routes by canoe. The same watercourses provided food in the form of fish, shellfish and eels; shells were used in many ways for ornaments, tools and as wampum.
