From a purely Biblical standpoint, there is no difference.
The reason is that God created sex, and He is very specific on who you should have sex with. This is not because He wants to limit you in any way, but rather because of the very nature of sex.
Sex is a binding, intimate act that joins two people on an emotional, physical, and spiritual level. When it is misused, it creates many problems. The book of Romans talks about the fact that any sexual misconduct, in any form, can result in disease. An example of this is pornography, there is a chance that you can get a virus on your computer, and protection (virus scan) only works so well.
Prostitution is the same way. But instead of doing it for pleasure or love, its for money, or some material gain. No matter how you look at it, prostitution will harm anyone who participates in it.
God created sex to be fun, and He created humans to have lots of sex. Else our Biology would be very different. The institution of marriage was created (in part) to be a safe, intimate way of having sex without any repercussions of any kind. How can you possibly compare a lifetime of growing intimacy and trust with a one night stand that results in aids? It should be known that prostitution is sinful in all religions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
