They did. In fact they came to America to escape religious persecution and the freedom to worship in their own way.
The Puritans believed that the Church in England was becoming too liberal and too corrupt, so they began worshipping in their own way. They eventually were forced out of England for their alternative methods of worship and their alternative beliefs, and they came to America, where they were free to practice religion as they pleased.
