The Pilgrims were looking for a place where they could worship as they pleased without being persecuted by other religious groups or government. The success of the Virginia colony provided a solution for the Pilgrims. The Plymouth Company, which was not having success like the Virginia Company, in attracting settlers to the New World, hit upon a scheme that would be successful to both Pilgrims and Company. The King was persuaded to let the Plymouth Company send the Pilgrims to America to provide a profitable colony to both the company and the Crown, and, in turn, the King would agree not to persecute the Pilgrims in their colony. When they arrived at Massachusetts Bay, they found a deserted Indian colony(Pawtuxet) that had been wiped out by illness years earlier. They considered it a sign from God that this was a good place to start the Plymouth Colony.
