There are two forms of massage techniques that are called cupping and they are very different from each other. In Western massage, cupping is a form of tapotement and consists of cupping your hands and lightly tapping them over a person's skin. In Asian therapy, particularly Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) cupping is the application of small glass jars to specific acupressure points on the body. A vacuum is created inside the cup during the therapy. Traditionally this was done with a flame, usually from an alcohol soaked cotton ball, but more recently, vacuum pumps have been added via a small valve at the top of the glass jar for more control, and less danger of being burned.
