My first test would be a compression test, it takes special equipment as it is a dynamic not static compression test.
You can find an exhaust bracket for a 1996 Chervrolet Cavalier in Billings, Montana at your local Auto Yard. You can find great deals!
Exhaust Brackets can be purchased from a few stores in Washington. The best place to get them is on www.Ebay.com, however that is not a physical store.
A restricted exhaust, possibly a plugged cataylitic converter.
yes, once the alternator is removed from the bracket, the axle and exhaust interferes with the removal of the alternator from the vehicle.
The power steering stays where it is at. There is only 1 bracket that won't hook up and that is the one that bolts to the factory exhaust manifold. You will have to modify that bracket are make a bracket that will hold the power steering pump and keep it from moving.

Maybe there is someone in your trunk trying to get out! Perhaps a loose exhaust pipe. Check the rear hanger bracket. Could also be a rod knock making reverberating through your exhaust system.
Yes a blocked exhaust will keep the engine from starting
First you have to order a replacement, disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the airbox hose. Also remove the vacuum. Pry the accelerator cable from the pivot, unbolt the bracket from the intake. Then remove bracket from the brake booster. Remove bolts, disconnect tension. Unbolt collector and remove exhaust manifold. Clean the intake then you're done!
This could be a loose exhaust bracket causing it to hit the underside on acceleration.
