It is usually when two sets of things that should correspond, don't correspond. For example, if you know you had a certain amount of money and you know you spent a certain amount of that money, then you would expect to have a certain amount left. You may then find that the amount you actually have isn't what it should be. That is a discrepancy. It may be because you miscounted the original amount, or did not get the correct change when you bought something or you actually have some of the money lost or there is still some in your pocket or wallet that you did not count. You may not know why there is a difference and so you will try to find the source of that discrepancy.
